Project Graduation
Each year the Aspen Club hosts Aspen Senior Project Graduation. This event is put on by the Junior & Senior parents with the support of many businesses in the community. The Aspen Club & Spa is honored to host an event that provides the graduates with an opportunity to spend one last evening with their fellow classmates full of fun and excitement in a safe, drug & alcohol free environment on such a special day in their lives. “Project Graduation” has been held at the Aspen Club & Spa for approximately 18 years. Each year it is amazing to see how the parents and community pull together to put on such an incredible event. A lot of time, thought and money is spent, but it is all worth it – especially if it saves a life!
Free memberships and training for Local Athletes, and Physical Therapy service for local sports teams

Free space for local charities
The Aspen Club knows how difficult it is to find affordable space in the town of Aspen. We are proud to have been able to provide free office space to two local charities in the our facility:
Komen Aspen
The Aspen Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure®! was established in 1990 by Sandra Goldman Israel. We have housed Komen at the Aspen Club for over four years. Komen Aspen serves a tri-county service area that includes the region from Battlement Mesa to Vail, CO as well as the Roaring Fork Valley. They are the only agency in our service area that provides grants and direct outreach to educate the public about breast health. Through their grants they are able to provide local women with low-cost or even no-cost breast screening and diagnostics. To date they have funded over $3.0 million in community based grants in Pitkin, Garfield and Eagle Counties; provided funding for thousands of low cost or no cost mammograms and ultrasounds; supported programs aimed at addressing alternative therapies and the importance of mind and spirit in the fight against breast cancer; and assisted in the purchase of state-of-the art diagnostic equipment for all of our service area hospitals as well as technical training. We are very proud to be affiliated with Komen and all the great work they do.
Cancer Survivor Center for Health and Wellbeing
The mission of the Cancer Survivor Center is to optimize the quality of life of cancer survivors. CSC was founded in early 2006 by Dr. Riggs Klika and provides scientifically based fitness programming, nutritional guidance, mental health services and one-on-one coaching in a caring, personal and professional environment. They are an organization devoted to increasing hope of the human spirit by providing resources to cancer survivors. We are also very proud to be affiliated with CSC as their mission ties in with our mission of providing support of overall well-being.
Public Lectures and Seminars held at the Club.
The Aspen Club holds numerous seminars and lectures during the year. These are all open to the public. Some of the recent topics in this past year were:

II. What is Our Vision of How the Aspen Club Moves into the Future.
The Aspen Club’s core mission is to serve the health and wellness needs of our members and the larger Aspen community. Aspen and the Aspen Club have an unique opportunity to do something exceptional at the Club site which can raise the standard for personal and community health as well as greatly enhance the services we provide to Aspen locals and visitors alike.
The Aspen Club’s proposed LEED for Neighborhood Development certified healthy living community has the potential to become an internationally renowned model for sustainable, healthy living development. It further cements Aspen’s standing as an environmental leader in this country and will position the Aspen Club as a leader in sustainable healthy neighborhood development.
This project is vital to the long term sustainability of the Aspen Club and, to a lesser extent, Aspen. Aspen Club Living will create growth opportunities for our entire staff to enhance their careers and their earning potential. This is because there will now be a more consistent customer flow throughout the year and we will have more interesting and complex programs to offer and our staff to work on. These types of long term opportunities are essential to keeping quality people in our town. This project will also create opportunities for community members to explore health and vitality that do not exist today. Finally, it will create an amenity for Aspen that few communities in the country can match.
The residential component of this project, specifically the residential owners and one week program participants are essential to the future of the Aspen Club. The owners of the residences will help fund the operations of the Club and ensure its viability and creativity for years to come. These owners and weekly participants will serve as the financial foundation for the many programs and retreats we describe below, in essence funding the development and operations of world class health programs. Their home owner fees will offset some of the basic costs of running the Club operations, such as maintenance, accounting, front desk and housekeeping. They will allow the Club to reinvest back into creating exceptional healthy living programs. Their presence at the Club will create more vitality and energy for all of our members and guest. In short, the residences will enable the Club to improve in almost every area of its operation and provide a stable financial base for the Aspen Club for the next two or three decades.

III. Explain the LEED for Neighborhood Development Pilot Program in More Detail:
The Aspen Club was recently accepted into the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development (LEED – ND) Pilot Program. We are excited to participate in what we believe is a powerful model for creating sustainable neighborhoods. The Aspen Club Living concept ties in well with LEED – ND and we feel can give back to the overall pilot program by adding a healthy living component to the concept of Neighborhood. Aspen can and should take a leading role in this kind of progressive development.
LEED for Neighborhood Development Overview
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, Congress for the New Urbanism, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, the LEED rating system is designed to encourage environmentally friendly development and improve land-use patterns. LEED for Neighborhood Development focuses primarily on the design and construction elements that bring buildings together and relate the developing neighborhood to its larger region or landscape. In this way it is the hope of the group to encourage eco-friendly development practices to spread beyond just construction companies and become a primary objective of developers as well.
According to the LEED for Neighborhood Development Pilot Version, “LEED provides rating systems that are voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven, grounded in accepted energy and environmental principals, and that strike a balance between established practices and emerging concepts.” The LEED system contains a number of pre-requisites that developers must achieve in their plans for neighborhoods, as well as a number of additional points which are awarded depending on further eco-friendly amenities that developers can offer either within their development or nearby. In order for a project to become LEED certified, it must meet all the pre-requisites in three different categories (Smart Location & Linkage, Neighborhood Pattern & Design, and Green Construction & Technology), and then obtain between 40 and 49 of a possible 106 additional points. If cases arise where a plan’s point total exceeds the required minimum, a project could be recognized by the council as achieving silver, gold, or platinum status.
The four different categories of pre-requisites and possible credits include Smart Location & Linkage, Neighborhood Pattern & Design, Green Construction & Technology, and Innovation & Design Process. Each of the first three groups has a number of requirements that projects must meet in order to receive certification, and all four have additional credits that can be met through greater environmentalism; there are multiple ways to meet each requirement and credit.
Smart Location & Linkage includes requirements and credits pertaining to the types of land developments are built on, as well as the development’s proximity to existing roads, bike paths, and local employment opportunities. Additional credits and higher points are awarded for locations within walking distances to schools, multi-use buildings (restaurants, post offices, health club, etc), areas that have been previously developed (infill sites), and with an eye towards long-term conservation management of local habitat and wetlands.
Neighborhood Pattern & Design is concerned with the density of the development (minimizing sprawl), the variation of houses in the development, and accessibility to transit facilities, public spaces, and active spaces. In this section, credits are awarded to developments that have diverse housing and allow families from different income levels to live near one another. Additionally, the development’s proximity to public parks and trails, and the ease with which public transportation system could be used are taken into account and awarded additional points.
Green Construction & Technology awards points based on how energy efficient the building are, the level of local disturbance that construction creates, and long-term waste/recycling plans. For instance, higher points are awarded to developments built that maximize solar heating or photovoltaic, offer recycling and composting options to tenants, and use recycled materials in the construction of the homes.
The final category, Innovation & Design Process contains no requirements, but offers an additional few points to development plans that are uniquely innovative in their attempt to create sustainable, eco friendly developments.
The LEED certification process consists of three stages, the first of which is optional. Initially, a plan can be submitted for LEED approval before city, town, or state approval is granted. If it meets LEED requirements, a certification will be issued contingent on the fact that it is built according to the initial plans. The second stage of certification occurs after any necessary local governments have approved the project. If a pre-review submission was made and LEED certified, any changes to the initial plan would have to be submitted at this time. The third and final stage of approval does not occur until construction is complete or near complete. Again, any changes that have been made throughout the period of construction would have to be communicated to the committee, and at this time USGBC would award any plaques/awards recognizing the project as a certified/silver/gold/platinum LEED project.

IV. How Will the Aspen Club Living Residential Units be Used?
We envision Aspen Club Living as a place where families will come annually for a healthy retreat. It will be the one time of the year when grandparents, their children and grandchildren can all get together under one roof. These families will stay in the same units and enjoy Aspen and our all of our programs for a fixed two weeks each year. Units are not planned for day use. When not used by owners in the high seasons, we will run weekly healthy living programs that guests will participate in. These units will allow us to develop a broad array of healthy living programs (see below) that will serve our members, the Aspen community and the owners of these units.
Specifically, the lodging units we are proposing will be used by owners in fixed two week blocks of time for 32 weeks of the year, approximately from Dec 15th to April 15th and from June 1st to Sept 30th. Because the dates of ownership are fixed, the same 19 families will visit the Club at the same time each year, creating a community feel throughout the project. The units during this time will see very limited turnover and will act in a manner very similar to most second homes in Aspen with some significant exceptions:
• Guests will arrive at the airport and be picked up by an Aspen Club Living shuttle.
• Their units will be cleaned, ready with their sports equipment, stocked with food and completely ready for them when they arrive, eliminating the need for a lot of little trips to town.
• They will have access to Aspen Club shuttle services and alternative vehicles while they are staying at the Club.
• We anticipate most of our owners will not rent cars.
While at the residences, they will participate in activities and programming at the Aspen Club, as well as take advantage of all the great things Aspen has to offer.
Outside these peak periods, the residences will be available for use in one week blocks for groups, families and individual travelers to participate in specific Aspen Club Living programming (see below). These programs will attract a wide range of participants and will serve locals who are in town during the shoulder seasons.

V. What Kind of Programs will Aspen Club Living Offer?
Aspen Club Living will enable us to create a broad range of exceptional programming that will be available to members, Aspen locals, residence owners and weeklong visitors. Much of the programming will be available throughout the year, while some of the special programs below will be run only during certain weeks of the year. With the new Aspen Club Living residences we can develop cutting edge healthy living programs. Examples of the types of programs we are planning include:

Currently the Aspen Club does a limited number of corporate retreats each year. We plan on growing this capability to create a corporate retreat program for local and national businesses that will energize, inspire and bring out the best in every participant. The Life Enhancement Program focuses on self-discovery, preventive and supportive care, and the development of positive lifestyle habits. This will be one of the core programs for our members and for residence owners. In addition, there will be special weeks and programs in which guests can explore a targeted wellness concern. They will have an invigorating, unforgttable experience and, most important, they'll learn how to keep that healthy feeling for life.
The Life Enhancement Program is an organized, in-depth approach to healthy living – which means staying fit, having fun, finding balance and becoming more of the person you want to be.

The new residences provide a residential base to develop destination programs focusing on a myriad of health and lifestyle opportunities. These programs will be open to our members and the general public.
The Aspen Club is an ideal setting for these types of retreats. Similar to our focus of creating a community with our residence owners, we envision these programs creating a devoted community of followers who come back annually to Aspen and their newfound friends.

VI. Conclusion
The Aspen Club is an important asset to the Aspen community and serves our town in many different ways. The changes we are proposing will have a positive impact on our neighbors (by reducing traffic and other impacts from today’s levels), our employees (by creating more growth opportunities and the ability to stay and be successful in Aspen), our members (by continuing to provide great services and programs to keep them healthy) and the town of Aspen (by developing a project that is a leader in sustainable development and continuing to serve the health needs of this community). The LEED certified neighborhood concept is at the leading edge of healthy living development and enables the Aspen Club to continue to be a productive asset for Aspen. This is a project that is a true win-win-win for all the parties involved.
